Understanding Traffic Control Pay Rates With Workmate Training

Are you considering a career in temporary traffic control or currently working in the industry and want to take the next step? Understanding your earning potential is crucial. Below, we discuss traffic controller pay rates in Western Australia, highlighting what influences pay rate income and how Workmate Training Academy can help you maximise your earning potential.

Understanding Traffic Controller Pay Rates in WA

Pay rates for traffic controllers in WA are determined by Main Roads and vary depending on several factors, including:

Traffic Controller Experience

As you gain more experience in traffic control and work in the field longer with more advanced qualifications, your potential to earn more increases. For example, a Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) or Traffic Controller (TC) who has less than 3 months of experience will start at $32 an hour. In contrast, someone with Advanced Worksite Traffic Management will start at $39 per hour, depending on their employment type (casual, part-time or full-time)

Qualifications

As mentioned above, a traffic controller with an AWTM will get paid more than someone with a BWTM qualification. Other qualifications will enable you to earn more than a BWTM, including obtaining an Operate Truck Mounted Attenuator (OTMA) qualification. This will allow you to earn a starting pay rate of $37.15 an hour.

Working Conditions

Traffic controllers in WA are eligible to earn more money per hour depending on the number of hours they work. A BWTM, or traffic controller, working an afternoon or night shift for less than 5 days in a row can earn over $50 an hour, and working on a public holiday will net them over $84 an hour, while working on a Sunday will result in pay over $67 an hour. Separate from the Main Road pay rates, different companies may pay additional money depending on the location of the work and if there is travel involved.
